Too much can kill the desired results of a
website: music, videos, and flash.

A website should upload for your visitor
between 5 to 10 seconds. And if they are
waiting and waiting… you may just have lost
a new reader.

Totally agree. Actually the craze for introducing a visitor to your website with a music video started about 4 years ago, when Flash came on the scene; peaked a couple of years ago; and today has totally died, except for a few leftover agencies who still think it’s a great idea to waste my time with music and ‘cool’ animation.

State of the art today is, if you click on my website, you get a very clean, clear home page with NO media, and it’s very obvious from the home page who I am, what I have to offer and where on the site you can go to find out more.

I do information architecture for these sites, and write content, and I know you’re right.
